In 1957, officials at Apopka, Clermont, and Winter Garden recognized the need to provide residents with a reliable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective source of household energy – natural gas.

These leaders came together to form a gas distribution district and petitioned the Florida state legislature. Two years later, Bill 2195, “An Act of the Florida Legislature Establishing the Lake Apopka Natural Gas District,” was passed and the Lake Apopka Natural Gas District (LANGD) was born.

Now, 62 years and over 26,000 customers later, the District continues to fulfill its mission of providing natural gas services to its member cities with an emphasis on courtesy and customer care. And as the districts of Apopka, Clermont and Winter Garden continue to grow, LANGD grows with them.

Over the past five years, the District has grown its clientele by over 42%. According to Elevate Lake Economic Development, Lake County was ranked the third fastest growing county in the state in 2020 and LANGD will continue to support that growth and expand its reach.

In addition to its exciting growth, in recent years, LANGD has also been recognized at the highest level for its commitment to excellence in the natural gas utilities industry.

In 2020, the organization won the highest honor ever – the American Public Gas Association (APGA) (SOAR) Gold System Global Achievement Recognition Award – for the first time in history. the company. The SOAR award program recognizes natural gas distribution utilities that demonstrate a commitment to excellence in the areas of system integrity, system improvement, employee safety and workforce development. -work, and Gold status is the highest possible achievement.

For ten years in a row, LANGD has also won the APGA Security Award, as well as the Florida Public Service Commission’s excellent security and compliance audit record. The safe delivery of natural gas is the number one priority for all LANGD employees.

The District’s relationship with APGA is far reaching and extends far beyond mere awards. The relationship also provides opportunities for LANGD to educate its member cities on the energy sources available to them.

Several members of the LANGD team have been involved with APGA over the 62 year history of the company. Most notably, in August 2019, Managing Director and CEO Samuel Davis Jr., assumed the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors of APGA where he championed LANGD and over 700 other natural gas utilities across the country.

In addition to membership, LANGD also attends the annual APGA conference each summer, which is the largest gathering of public and community natural gas professionals across the country. This is an opportunity for the District to reconnect with important industry leaders and to think about ways to improve their services. In 2021, the conference will take place July 25-28 in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico.

As our community continues to grow, the District looks forward to growing with it. For 62 years, LANGD has been committed to providing safe, reliable and affordable natural gas service to every home and business it serves, and the best is yet to come.
