Scientific culture for a green future

BEIJING, December 06, 2021– (COMMERCIAL THREAD) – On November 30, the 2021 World Science Literacy Conference (WCSL) kicked off in Beijing. Under the theme ‘Science Literacy for a Green Future’, the conference invited esteemed decision makers, top scientists, renowned academics, as well as leaders and representatives of key science and technology organizations (such as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization International Organization, International Science Council, World Federation of Engineering Organizations and World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries).

The improvement of public scientific culture and the promotion of a low-carbon green transformation are among the topics covered. Together, the participants shared their ideas, findings and experiences of using science for green development, while contributing to an effective communication and partnership mechanism to improve public science literacy globally.

The conference is sponsored by the China Science and Technology Association (CAST). In his virtual remarks, the Executive Vice President and Chief Secretary General of the CAST Secretariat, Zhang Yuzhuo, pointed out that green development is a revolution that is changing the human perception of existing development concepts and models. Science and technology are the pillars of green development. Public awareness of the environment and increased capacity for environmental protection are also the basis of green development.

The conference participants actively discussed and delivered speeches on science literacy and green development.

Ms. Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, shared the important resolutions of the COP26 meeting. She underlined the importance of scientific culture in green development for public policy making and underlined the transformation of the conceptual behavior of citizens as a central element to unlock the potential of the Paris Agreement.

Between December 1 and 3, six WCSL 2021 Thematic Forums were held in sequence. They are:

– Cultivate young talents for a better future

– A road to resilience and inclusive recovery: working together for a better future

– Public literacy on science and green development

– Development of urban health and public scientific literacy

– Improving public scientific literacy and scientific and technological innovation

– Equity in global public science literacy

In the context of global efforts to decarbonise all aspects of daily life and develop a green economy, the professional forces represented by WCSL will make an increasing contribution. This conference aims to be a platform for global, comprehensive and high-level exchange and cooperation to facilitate the improvement of public science culture, effectively address global challenges related to science, technology and social development. , and promote the sustainable development of humanity.
