LEWISTOWN — The Family Medicine Residency Program at Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital, in conjunction with Geisinger Human Resources, invites students from the area interested in healthcare careers, both in clinical and non-clinical settings. clinics, to enroll in the Virtual Health Professions Summer Immersion Program, which is scheduled to begin on June 27.

The program encourages students to explore the benefits and rewards of working in healthcare, whether in direct patient care or in business support areas. Students will learn the roles of a range of professionals, from doctors and nurses to security and hospitality workers. They will also receive practical advice on career planning, launching their next chapter and the benefits of seeking a mentor.

“HPSIP is designed for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors to learn about health services and the lifestyle of our community,” said Stephanie M. Jones, C-TAGME, family medicine residency program manager at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital. “Our program can lay the foundation for becoming a more viable candidate for competitive programs in medicine and other healthcare-related disciplines, including information technology and finance.”

Jones said the HPSIP program helps young people from all walks of life project themselves into a health sciences environment.

“HPSIP mentors will encourage students to set educational and career goals and make informed choices that will foster continued interest in healthcare-related careers. It is an academic enrichment program designed to encourage students to pursue fulfilling professions locally,” she says.

The free four-week program consists of virtual presentations that will take place on Monday evenings starting at 6 p.m., with a Wednesday evening during the third week. The program runs from June 27 to August 8.
