VC Public Conference in Ottawa and other updates

The University of Cape Town (UCT) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, will deliver a public lecture at the University of Ottawa on Monday, June 6, 2022. Read more about this and other updates below.

1. UCT VC will give a public lecture at the University of Ottawa

The campus community is invited to connect as Professor Phakeng delivers a public lecture at the University of Ottawa in Canada at 10:00 p.m. on Monday, June 6.

Entitled “Walking the Tightrope Between the Lecture Hall and the Picket Line: Reflections from a Changing University Leader,” the talk is part of the University of Ottawa’s Excellence in Education Lecture Series. Professor Phakeng will address the audience on her experience as a VC of UCT and her keynote will focus on what it means to be a “courageous and transformative leader”.

Phakeng took office on July 1, 2018 with a vision to ensure that UCT maintains its position as the premier university on the African continent, while driving an agenda of radical transformation.

2. UCT CFO reappointed as President of SAICA

UCT’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Vincent Motholo, has been reappointed as President of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). Motholo, a qualified public accountant who joined UCT on October 1, 2021, was reappointed at the recent meeting of the SAICA Board of Directors following the Annual General Meeting held at the end of May 2022.

In this role, Motholo will chair the board of trustees of the institute which is at the forefront of developing, influencing and directing the highest standards of ethics, education and excellence. professional in providing quality accounting skills. SAICA is responsible for safeguarding professional standards; advancing and maintaining the relevance of the profession; and regulating the professional conduct of members and associates.

His reappointment as SAICA President illustrates the caliber of leadership and immense expertise within the UCT executive.

Motholo also served on SAICA’s Audit and Risk Committee as an independent non-board member. Its other past members in the industry include the Independent Finance and Remuneration Committee of the Banking Industry Training Authority, the Audit and Risk Committee of the South African State Theater and the Risk Committee of the Independent Police and Investigation Directorate, of which he was Chairman.


3. Declaration of COVID-19 vaccination status

The university continues to ensure adherence to COVID-19 health protocols and to mitigate the spread of infection within the campus community.

This, however, requires everyone to take responsibility for helping to reduce the risk. Providing accurate information in UCT’s immunization status reporting system is one way to help. This application complies with the COVID-19 Code of Practice published by the Department of Employment and Labor on February 15, 2022, which came into force on May 4, 2022.

This information is for statistical purposes only and, unless mandated by the National Department of Health, will not be shared with anyone. This process has also been approved by UCT’s Personal Information Protection Act (POPIA) consultants.

Staff and students can report their vaccination status by visiting the UCT Health Center and clicking on the ‘Manage Immunization Status’ button. Although uploading a vaccine certificate is voluntary, UCT encourages staff and students to do so.


4. 2022 Development Dialogues

The Development Dialogue (DD) cycle for Professional, Administrative Support and Service (PASS) managers and executives ends on May 31 each year, and June 1 marks the start of our performance review season, performance contracting and development planning.

These breakout sessions are expected to be completed by mid-July 2022 and should be used to connect and engage effectively, and to facilitate performance and development discussions.
