How to plan a small research project so it stays realistic and worthwhile

Many first-time researchers start with good ideas but quickly feel overwhelmed: the topic is too broad, the schedule slips, or the data never quite fits the question. Careful planning at the start saves time, stress and confusion later.
This guide walks through a practical planning process for a small research project, such as a bachelor thesis, master work or early-career inquiry. It focuses on simple steps you can adapt to your own field and local requirements.
Clarify what you are trying to learn and why it matters
Before thinking about methods or data, spend some focused time on the “why”. What do you want to learn, and why should anyone care about the answer? Try to express this in plain language that a fellow student from another subject could follow.
A helpful exercise is to write two short paragraphs: one about the topic in everyday terms and one about why it is worth exploring. If you struggle to do this, your topic might be too vague or too technical for the scale of a small project.
Scope your topic so it fits your time and resources
Many beginners choose topics that would require a whole research team and several years. A key planning skill is learning to “shrink” an idea so it becomes realistic. You can narrow your scope by limiting population, time period, location or focus.

A basic template might include: your main question, key concepts or variables, who or what you will observe, how you will collect information, how you will organise and analyse it, and what limits or constraints you expect.
Decide whether to use quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods
Your question should guide your choice of approach. Quantitative approaches are useful when you want to measure patterns across many cases. Qualitative approaches suit questions about experiences, meanings or complex processes in more depth.

Plan sampling and recruitment in practical terms

Many promising designs fail because the planned participants are difficult to reach. When planning, ask yourself very specific questions: exactly where will you find participants, how will you contact them, and what might motivate them to take part?
Consider realistic numbers and time. For example, arranging ten in-depth interviews often takes much longer than people expect, especially if you rely on email invitations. Build in extra time for cancellations, low response rates and follow-up messages.
Think about data privacy and ethics from the start
Even small projects can raise important ethical and privacy questions. If you collect information about people, you are likely handling personal data, sometimes sensitive data. Requirements differ by country and institution, so local guidance is essential.
At the planning stage, consider what information you will collect, how you will store it securely, who will have access, how long you will keep it and how you will anonymise or pseudonymise it. Make sure your information sheet and consent process match these choices.
Map tasks onto a realistic timeline
A good plan does not only say what you will do, but also when. Start by listing major phases such as background reading, protocol finalisation, ethics approval if needed, data collection, analysis and writing. Then break each phase into smaller steps.
Work backwards from your final deadline and assign time blocks to each step. Be honest about your other commitments, such as exams or work. Many people underestimate how long data cleaning and analysis will take, so leave more time than you think you need.
Identify risks and simple backup options
No plan survives exactly as written, but a thoughtful plan includes backup routes. Ask yourself what could realistically go wrong: low recruitment, technical problems, unavailable data or unexpected personal circumstances.
For each major risk, note at least one practical alternative. For instance, if recruiting professionals will be difficult, could you instead use existing documents or a smaller, more accessible group? If a survey does not reach enough responses, can you add a small number of interviews?
Document your plan and keep it flexible
Finally, write your plan in a short, structured document that you can share with a supervisor or peers. Include your refined question, brief background, design overview, sampling and recruitment, ethical considerations, timeline and risk plan.
Treat this document as a living tool rather than a rigid contract. As you progress and learn more, you may need to adjust parts of the design. Make small, reasoned changes rather than frequent major shifts, and record what you change and why.
Careful planning may feel slow at the start, but it usually makes the rest of the research smoother, more focused and more rewarding. Use these steps as a flexible checklist and adapt them to the expectations of your field, institution and supervisor.
