A helpful habit is to translate relative changes into absolute terms. If something increased from 1 in 1 000 to 2 in 1 000, it did “double”, yet the change may still be small in everyday terms. When absolute numbers are missing, look for more complete coverage that includes them.
Notice the timeframe and whether the data is current

Statistics have a shelf life. Economic figures, health data and platform usage numbers can shift significantly over months or years. Some posts quietly recycle old numbers without mentioning the original date.
Look for the year the data was collected and the date it was published. If the topic is sensitive or fast-moving, such as public health or elections, consider checking the most recent figures directly from an official or primary source mentioned in the article.
Separate correlation from cause
Many online stories suggest that one thing “leads to” or “drives” another, when the underlying data only shows that two things move together. This is correlation, and it does not prove that one factor is responsible for the other.
If you see language that strongly implies cause, look for details about how other possible explanations were ruled out. Well‑designed studies usually mention limitations and avoid absolute language. If that nuance is missing in a headline or social post, seek out the original study or a more detailed summary.
Practical checks you can use in a few minutes
When you come across a statistic that seems important, you can pause and run through a short checklist. This does not guarantee perfection, but it greatly improves your chances of a balanced view.

You can usually find these on official statistics portals, recognised research databases, institutional reports or transparent survey descriptions. When details seem unclear or inconsistent, compare at least two reputable sources and note any differences or caveats they mention.
