How to use small teaching experiments to keep improving your classroom without burning out

Many teachers want to refine their teaching but feel overwhelmed by big reforms, new tools and constant “best practice” trends. It can seem like you must redesign everything at once or change nothing at all.
A more realistic path is to treat your teaching as a series of small, low-risk experiments. Instead of chasing perfection, you try one focused change, observe what happens and keep what works. This approach is manageable, evidence-aware and kinder to your energy.
What are small teaching experiments?
A small teaching experiment is a limited, intentional change to how you run a lesson, activity or assignment. It has a clear goal, a short time frame and a plan for how you will judge its impact.
Think of it as “classroom tinkering with purpose.” You are not rewriting the curriculum or changing every lesson. You are adjusting one element, such as how students prepare for a discussion, how you give feedback, or how groups work together.
